Dental Quality Alliance releases measures to address emergency room use, diabetes

The Dental Quality Alliance approved three adult quality measures at its June 14 meeting that address oral care for patients with diabetes and the flooding of emergency rooms by patients with nontraumatic dental conditions.

August JADA finds sealed primary molars have lower caries risk

Federal legislation would bar dental, vision plans from setting fees for noncovered services

The Dental and Optometric Care Access Act was reintroduced in the U.S. House of Representatives July 15, proposing federal legislation that would prohibit dental and vision plans from setting fees for noncovered services. The bill, H.R. 3762, also called the DOC Access Act, is supported by the ADA and American Optometric Association.

Howard University dental school names new dean

Howard University announced July 17 it named Dr. Andrea D. Jackson as dean of its College of Dentistry. She had served as interim dean since July 2018.

Nashville endodontist elected first female president of Tennessee Dental Association

Dr. Terryl Propper, a Nashville endodontist, likes to quote the first and only female prime minister of India, Indira Ghandi: “There are two kinds of people, those who do the work and those that take the credit. There is less competition in the first group.” Doing the work has led Dr. Propper to be elected, and now serve, as the first female president of the Tennessee Dental Association.

EPA updates rule prohibiting improper disposal of pharmaceutical hazardous waste

Dental facilities and other health care businesses that generate pharmaceutical hazardous waste are required to manage those products according to the provisions of a rule that goes into effect Aug. 21, according to the ADA Council on Dental Practice.

Doctors share reconstruction story from the heart

Dr. Joseph Massad calls it “the gift of a challenge.” Four years ago, the Tulsa, Oklahoma-based dentist received a call from the Oklahoma Veteran Affairs and oral and maxillofacial surgeon Dr. Brett Shirley. They were looking for a dentist who could help reconstruct the nose and jaw/teeth of a Vietnam veteran. The patient, George Purifoy, had received radiation therapy and undergone multiple surgeries for a nasal squamous cell carcinoma that resulted in a total rhinectomy and the loss of his front teeth. He was also in terrible pain from the after-effects of the radiation.

Groups ‘remain concerned’ about CMS waivers, ask agency not to implement upcoming guidance

In response to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ Request for Information on state relief empowerment waivers, the ADA, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and Children’s Dental Health Project said they remain concerned that the agency’s waiver guidance could adversely impact children’s access to oral health care and urged the agency not to implement the guidance.
