Joint Commission considers ‘wrong site block dental local anesthesia’ a sentinel event

Federal legislation would bar dental, vision plans from setting fees for noncovered services

The Dental and Optometric Care Access Act was reintroduced in the U.S. House of Representatives July 15, proposing federal legislation that would prohibit dental and vision plans from setting fees for noncovered services. The bill, H.R. 3762, also called the DOC Access Act, is supported by the ADA and American Optometric Association.

Dr. Joseph Massad calls it “the gift of a challenge.” Four years ago, the Tulsa, Oklahoma-based dentist received a call from the Oklahoma Veteran Affairs and oral and maxillofacial surgeon Dr. Brett Shirley. They were looking for a dentist who could help reconstruct the nose and jaw/teeth of a Vietnam veteran. The patient, George Purifoy, had received radiation therapy and undergone multiple surgeries for a nasal squamous cell carcinoma that resulted in a total rhinectomy and the loss of his front teeth. Study finds association between triclosan, osteoporosis

A study published by the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism has found an association between osteoporosis in women and triclosan, a chemical that had been used as an antimicrobial agent in toothpaste.

Government had record year for HIPAA enforcement in 2018

The Office for Civil Rights announced Feb. 7 that it settled 10 cases totaling $28.7 million in 2018, a record in enforcement actions. The previous high was 2016 with $23.5 million accumulated.

DEA warns registrants of extortion scam

Program to help combat veterans receive free oral care expanding throughout nation

Mr. Morrison is one of about 400 veterans in more than 15 states that has received free dental treatment as a result of E4V, a Washington state-based nonprofit that connects veterans with “wingmen,” otherwise known as dentists who treat veterans at no charge. E4V has more than 400 dentists, plus dozens of specialists and dental labs across the United States that have provided volunteer services to low-income veterans. Of those, 226 are in the state of Washington.

New Jersey Dental Association lodges complaint against SmileDirect Club
